Strong…everyone.”

Sounded like a boy band to Skyler but he took the case and looked in it to what looked like a spanking new football within, scrawled with names. “These are important guys, then?”

Chet rolled his eyes. “Yeah.”

Skyler looked at the names he couldn’t quite decipher, all written with silver marker. He raised his eyes to Jamie. “What do you think?”

Jamie, ever the pragmatist, turned to Chet.

“Will this rock his world?”

“Pretty much,” he said. “I’m asking $200 for it.”

Skyler gasped. For a football? He gingerly handed it back. “I can’t really spend that much. I’m a high school teacher.”

“What were you planning on spending?”

“Well, no more than say…um, a hundred?

But that’s my high end.”

Chet twisted his lips in thought.

“Well…since you’re a friend of Ramone’s.”

When Chet turned, Skyler mouthed to Jamie, who’s Ramone?

Jamie shook his head in his don’t-worry-about-it expression and watched Chet bring down a framed jersey. “Trust me, this is worth way more than a hundred, but Ramone sent you and I always repay favors.”

He presented it to Skyler and for once, Skyler wished he knew and could appreciate what he was looking at. It was a blue jersey with the

number 80 on it in white and the name “Largent”

across the shoulders.

“This,” said Chet, “is a prize. It’s Steve Largent’s signed jersey. He played for Seattle from ’76 to ’89. Never got traded, never left. A one-team guy. He’s a congressman now.”

“That’s good, huh?” Skyler looked it over.

The jersey was pressed and lay pristine against its mounting. He could plainly see the signature in the white numbers of the “80.”

“That’s better than good, dude. That’s the whole enchilada.”

“But that sounds expensive.”

“I can let you have it for $120 bucks. But I’m really cutting it to the bone as it is. Ramone might owe me a favor after this.”

“Oh, I don’t know if I can let you do that—”

“Skyler’s overwhelmed,” Jamie interjected.

“We’re going to step over here and talk, okay?”

Chet took it back and held it, gazing lovingly at the jersey. He plainly loved his particular obsession.

Jamie took Skyler’s arm and steered him to the other side of the room next to a lit neon sign that said “Chicago Bulls.” “Look Sky,” whispered Jamie.” I think he’s giving you a great deal. All his stuff is authentic. Ramone is one of my best customers. He brokers a lot of websites and blogs for me to design and write for. I trust him. And he sent me here with the best recommendation. If this guy will give you that jersey for that amount, it has to be a good deal.”

“It’s a lot of money.”

“But Keith will love it, don’t you think?”

Skyler glanced over Jamie’s shoulder at the jersey again, thinking about Keith wearing his own from college. “Yeah. He’ll be thrilled. I hope.”

Jamie elbowed him. “Then get it!”

“Should I?”

“Yeah. Can’t you just imagine Keith’s face?”

Skyler could. “Okay, Chet,” he said, turning. “It’s a deal.”
